Inside Baseball: ML in a Baseball Front Office
Modern professional baseball is a rich domain for applied machine learning. Front offices attempt to optimize the construction and deployment of their teams by using high-frequency spatiotemporal data, video, and event data. This talk surveys how ML is used in 3 primary domains: (1) on-field strategy, (2) player performance forecasting, and (3), biomechanics and movement science. I will outline the current state of the art in these domains and discuss open problems that motivate the development of new methods.
