CFAM Discussion: AI in Today's Classrooms — "All Roads Lead to ChatGPT: How Generative AI is Eroding Social Interactions and Student Learning Communities"

Join us for an invited talk with Irene Hou, PhD student in Cognitive Science at UCSD. Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are rapidly becoming the default source of help for students, but this shift comes with hidden social costs. Drawing on interview studies of computing students, this talk suggests that reliance on AI is reshaping help-seeking behaviors, impacting peer interactions, and eroding the social fabric of our student learning communities. I argue that while AI expands access to information, it often replaces the social pathways through which students learn how to belong and participate. The talk concludes with preliminary considerations on integrating AI in ways that preserve our learning communities.
