CFAM Discussion: AI in Today's Classrooms — Impacts of Cognitive Offloading w/ Shruteek Mairal and Chris Neimeth
This discussion examines cognitive offloading in the context of AI use in today's classrooms, drawing on recent research on the relationship between the usage of AI tools and lowered critical thinking abilities. We'll use a chatbot designed by TAs Shruteek Mairal (ChE) and Chris Neimeth (BioE) as a concrete example of how AI can offer support while minimizing over-reliance. The goal is to discuss where helpful scaffolding ends and problematic cognitive offloading begins.
